Midwives and Climate

A Toolkit for Midwives and Midwifery Advocates During COP28

The COP28 official program is one indication that private and public funders are waking up to the reality that addressing the climate crisis must involve strategies to improve the health and status of women, especially women in the Global South and East. Midwives, as care providers and defenders of women’s sexual and reproductive health are key players in designing resilient health systems capable of withstanding the worst impacts of a warming world, delivering environmentally sustainable health services, and empowering women and other birthing people to make decisions that benefit themselves, their families and the planet. Put simply, climate activism is embedded in the midwife-led continuity model of care.

This toolkit is intended to be used by midwives and midwifery advocates — those on the ground in Dubai during COP28, and those monitoring the conversation from their social media feeds — to ensure midwifery is front and centre in strategies to address climate change and its impact on the health and wellbeing of women and families.

Messaging

  • Message 1

Midwives play a key role in providing eco-friendly #SRH care. By offering community-based services, they reduce the need for travel to health facilities, cutting the carbon footprint and making care more accessible. This ensures high-resource care is reserved for those in need. #COP28 #MidwivesAndClimate

  • Message 2

The midwife-led continuity model of care uses fewer resources in the short- and long-term. Embracing this, midwives provide safe, low-intervention care, resulting in minimal medical waste during normal vaginal births. #COP28 #MidwivesAndClimate

  • Message 3

Breastfeeding offers unmatched benefits for infants' growth & development and is a win for the planet too! 🌍 It's eco-friendly, requiring no intense resources, cans, or plastic. Midwives are key in helping mothers achieve their breastfeeding goals. #COP28 #MidwivesAndClimate

  • Message 4

Midwives are #SRH educators, empowering community members with family planning knowledge. They advocate for contraceptive use & child spacing, leading to smaller families & broader career choices for women. This enhances economic resilience & mitigates climate impact. #COP28 #MidwivesAndClimate

  • Message 5

Community-based midwives are unsung heroes during climate disasters, providing swift reproductive and maternal health services to those in crisis. #COP28 #MidwivesAndClimate

Case Study: Midwives as Activists

More than 59 ICM Midwives’ Associations have signed an open letter urging for decisive measures to reduce carbon emissions, emphasising the critical role of midwives in addressing the health impacts of climate change on pregnancy, birth, and early childhood. The associations call for policies that include midwives in climate action planning, invest in sustainable midwife-led care models, and take broader actions to cut carbon emissions and adopt green technologies.

This is just one example of how midwives, and the organisations that represent them, are actively involved in movements and policy advocacy to advance the profession, and improve the status, health and wellbeing of women and gender diverse people.

Using the Toolkit

Here are a few suggestions on how to use the above messages and corresponding graphics.

  • Share on social media and encourage others in your network to do the same: Share a LinkedIn, Facebook or Instagram message using the above messages and graphics throughout the week of COP28 (Nov 30 - Dec 12) to educate your community about midwives. Make sure to tag #COP28 and #MidwivesAndClimate and mention anyone from your network attending COP in your post.

  • If you’re speaking at COP28 (or know of someone that is) integrate the messages into your talking points: These messages are designed to be added to speeches or integrated into discussions with decision makers. We are asking our community to connect with their organisational leaders and any individuals in their networks speaking during COP28 and encourage them to underscore the critical role of midwives in responding to climate events and mitigating the worst impacts of climate change.

  • Share this toolkit with your network: Send an email to your members and partners with a link to this toolkit and a reminder to centre midwives in their climate advocacy during and after COP28.

  • Publish the messages in your COP28 newsletter: If you or your organisation is sending out a dedicated COP28 or monthly newsletter, pull together a couple of these messages and encourage your readership to learn about and advocate for midwives as climate activists.
